PATTARA Family

P.C. Varghese (Joychan Koottunkal), 1937-2023, 6th Generation. P.C. Vargese, affectionately called as Joychan was born to Chandy and Thresiamma, Pattara, Koottunkal on 21.03.1937.He was the fourth child of the couple. As a boy he was very handsom and smart. On his graduation from SD College, Alleppuzha, he served in the Indian Air Force as an officer for a few years. After returning from IAF, Joychan joined Indian Airlines as a ground engineer and worked at Bombay for about two years. Subsequently migrated to Canada in 1967 and began working almost immediately for Air Canada from where he retired as a Technical Writer in 1994. Joychan was active in upholding Malayalee culture and language. He was a great example of how to blend into Canadian life without losing the cultural base of his homeland. He was instrumental in founding various cultural organizations in North America. He took pride in starting Malayalam classes in Montreal. He was a voracious reader, as well as interested in subjects such as history, literature and technology. He has authored many poems and plays in Malayalam under his pen name 'Varas', several of which were performed at Malayalee Association of Quebec (MAQ) events. For his outstanding contribution to the community, Joychan was specially honored by MAQ in 2018. Joychan was happily married to Thresiamma, daughter of Mrs & Mr Mathai, Aaviyil, Shankarapurry, Kuravilagad who was already working at the Montreal Neurological Institute. The couple have three sons Alex, Mathew (Jamie) and George and three grandchildren Andrew, Lauren and Christopher. Due to complications developed from Alzheimer’s, Joychan was under hospital care for a few days and succumbed to the ailments peacefully on 07/12/2023 early morning(Indian time) at the age of 86. The mortal remains of Joychan is laid to rest at Salon funéraire Rideau Funeral Home 4275, boul. des Sources, Dollard-des-Ormeaux, QC, CANADA, H9B 2A6. May his soul Rest In Peace.
